New Comic Number One

Rumours that the British Comic Industry is moribund continue to be proven wrong as several brand new comics are due to be published over the next 30 days or so. Here's the first, FUNNY MONSTERS COMIC a splendid little thing by Joe Matthews, available in newsagents in the North West and Midlands next week. Give it a go, looks good. (Don't worry, I'm not involved, I just wanted you to know about it).

Well, I'd hardly call a 16 page comic with an extremely limited distribution an indication of a thriving industry, NP. As someone once said somewhere (and I agree), we don't have a comics 'industry' any more - it's more like a car boot sale or a craft fayre. Those who are currently working in comics and (perhaps) doing all right for themselves may have a more optimistic view of things than the rest of us, but comics (as we know them) certainly seem to be in terminal decline - occasional (and usually temporary) surges in pulse-rate aside.

It's an interesting situation, Gordon, of course we'll never see a comics industry as it was in the 1970s and 1980s again, just as we won't see a British Film Industry as it was in the 1940s and 1950s or the Paris Book Publishing scene as it was between the Wars, or...and so on. But we do have people willing to publish new comics, and I like to support them, just as I do if someone makes a new movie or publishes a book. I prefer printed comics to web stuff, so I wish them well. Let's see what it's like, anyway.

You're certainly to be commended for supporting those who are putting their money where there mouth is (so to speak), NP, and I wouldn't decry you for that. However, wouldn't it be great if we had at least one British company who was prepared to meet the challenge of cultivating the potential readership that lurks out there?

It would also be nice if some existing company could get behind this new comic in some way, perhaps distributing it through its own channels for a very tiny percentage. Let's hope it does well anyway.
