In 1972 I had to travel to and from London a few times by myself. I was only 12 at the time, so, although I was OK about it, some of the adults who would see me off at Euston were a bit dubious. On one occasion, my uncle was delighted to find a pretty young lady offering to look after me on the journey, and gave me a thumbs up and a wink as the train pulled out of the station. The young lady was Shirley Pearce, of the singing group The Flirtations. They were on TV a lot in those days, and had several records out too. Well we passed a delightful two and a half hours together, she regaling me with stories of TV Centre, Cliff Richard (they were residents on his TV show at the time) and the record business, me with wide-eyed wonder! all too soon, the journey was over and the tall, elegant Miss Pearce walked with me to my bus-stop and waved me off. Next month I see the Flirtations are appearing at a venue near me- the question is, do I go and say hello, introducing myself and see if she remembers me, or do I allow her to not see the 12 year old she helped out one day is now in his 50s?! Mmh...
What a great anecdote! It'd be nice if she remembered you... but if not it might be a bit awkward. Although chances are she would remember as it wasn't like a brief meeting.
ReplyDeleteOooh, that would be fab. If you like the music I'd be tempted to go along anyway and have a nice night out. And if you get the chance to meet her that would a lovely bonus. I'm sure she'd remember having helped you though, even if not able to actually remember you in person. Would be nice to say hello if you get the chance though especially as it's such a nice little story. She'll love it!
